Byker
Ovingham Reading Room
A partly dramatised documentary built around Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s photographs of the Newcastle terraced community, demolished to make way for the Byker Wall.
Byker is an intimate portrait of a community faced with redevelopment and a celebration of the richness of its culture, evoking an entire era in British working-class life.
This screening is presented by Ovingham Reading Room Film Night and is supported by additional short films from the Young Women’s Film Academy.
The Young Women’s Film Academy is a charity that provide free filmmaking activities and services for young women and the local communities across the North-East of England.

A special one-off screening of the 2004 Tyne Tees series ‘The Last Shepherds’ in partnership with the North-East Film Archive. Film maker Charles Bowden was keen to document the traditional ways of life in the countryside before they disappeared. In the early 2000’s, he had his opportunity.
A captivating glimpse of a fading era, this series follows Dave, Stewart and wife Gwen as they tend their flocks on the rugged Cheviot Hills in Northumberland.
Inspirational and evocative, this fascinating look at shepherding traditions chronicles a way of life that is now becoming a distant memory.
This is a rare opportunity to experience this 4-part documentary 20 years after it was first broadcast.

As mainstream success eludes our heroine, leading her to unite with a ragtag team of rejects, misfits, and a certain love interest named Mister J, "Joker the Harlequin" is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city's fascist caped crusader.
Helmed by writer/director/editor/star Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film, The People’s Joker is a deeply personal journey that's as much documentary as it is parody.
